Page 1 of 3 ![]() Renting a car from a nationwide car rental company is the most convenient way to get around at your tourist destination. Here are a few pointers for car rentals:
Requirements for renting: You already know you can if you have a US drivers license. However, if you have one, the rules vary from state to state. Some states would allow driving on International Drivers Permit or even driver license from India. Others may need a US license. Check with your local car rental company about their policy.
Car Rental Companies: A lot of car rental companies do business nationwide and often have pick up locations at the airports or would provide pick up/drop off for their customers from the airport. Enterprise Car Rental even picks you up from your home/office if you are renting a car from a non-airport location. Certain restrictions such as distance of pick up location from their business apply. Other nationwide rental companies are National, Avis, Hertz, Alamo and Fox. The first four do have corporate affiliations with schools and businesses. Check with your transport office if you can get a better rate through them. Corporate accounts obviate the need for paying insurance in most cases, which forms a big chunk of the fees (explained in detail later). Types of Cars: You can choose from a wide selection of cars to suit your needs. Main factors to consider are number of passengers, luggage space required, and type of trip (road/off-road). If you are going for an off-road trip, an SUV with all wheel drive (also known as a 4 wheel drive or 4WD) would be the better choice. |
